FAQ

What is RPMUD?
RPMUD is a MUD game server. It provides an interface for building your own MUD (Multi-User Dimension) and populating it with non-player characters and items for the participants to interact with. You can also create quests for participants to embark on, and set interaction-triggers to make their experience of the dimension richer.

What are the SRD rules?
RPMUD uses the SRD rule system to govern things like combat, skill checks, character development, abilities etc. Implementation of the SRD rules is by no means complete, but the aim is  to fully  implement the SRD rule system meaningfully in RPMUD. The SRD rules were released under Open Gaming License. and are distinct from the proprietary content which World-Builders running the server bring to RPMUD.

What is required to run RPMUD?
RPMUD stores its data as marked-up text, in XML format. To run the RPMUD server, you will need to install MSXML 4 SDK or later from Microsoft. This provides the resources that RPMUD needs to load and work with the XML document object model. A link to the Microsoft MSXML 4 page is available from the download section.

How can I install RPMUD?
Download the zipped file from this website. Unzip it to a folder on your computer. The server runs from the RPMUD.exe file. Double-clicking on this will run the server, presenting you with a console from which you can launch editors to build the dimension or start the game server itself.

How do Users connect to RPMUD?
To access your MUD server, Users will need to Telnet to your server's Internet address and the port number for the game. You set your port number in the Preferences.xml file. You can edit this file directly in notepad. The default port is 8000. If your server is behind a firewall, you will need to forward port 8000 to the computer running your MUD server.

I can't get RMPUD to work. Why have you released this on the internet if it isn't ready?
Please bear in mind that RPMUD is Beta software. I envisage a stable, bug-minimised and hassle-free release will be available within the next eight months. You can help me achieve this by reporting any bugs you encounter via the contact page detailing the issue  in as clear a manner as possible.
